Staycation in Cebu: IT Park or Mactan?

A staycation in Cebu is really a choice between two islands of feeling, thirty minutes apart. On one side there's Cebu IT Park: walkable, bright, awake at midnight. On the other, Mactan: salt air, resort pools, and the airport ten minutes from your towel. Neither is better. They're just for different weekends.

The case for IT Park

IT Park is the corner of Cebu City that runs on café hours. It began life as an economic zone for tech companies and grew into something locals half-jokingly call the city's mini BGC: gated, clean, and dense with restaurants, coworking spaces, and late-night food you can walk to in slippers. Ayala Malls Central Bloc sits in the middle of it, and the Sugbo Mercado night market fills the weekend evenings with smoke and lechon.

This is the staycation for people who relax by being near everything without needing to drive to any of it. Check in, drop the bags, walk to dinner, walk home. The city hums below the window and somehow that's the restful part.

The case for Mactan

Mactan is the opposite instruction: slow down. The island holds most of Cebu's beach resorts, lined up along Punta Engaño and Maribago on the eastern side, plus the day-trip boats out to Nalusuan and the sandbars. Island hopping, snorkeling, an afternoon of doing genuinely nothing. And because Mactan-Cebu International Airport is on the island itself, it's the natural landing pad for short trips: you can be at the water within half an hour of the carousel.

City weekends are for being near everything. Island weekends are for being near nothing.

The new wildcard: an arena by the sea

There's a new reason to plan a Cebu weekend around a date on the calendar. The SM Seaside Cebu Arena opens on July 11, 2026 at the SM Seaside complex on the city's south coast. Seven storeys, around 25,000 seats, one of the largest indoor arenas in the country. BINI plays the opening show, and acts like IV of Spades and LANY are already booked through the year.

Concert weekends used to mean flying to Manila. Now the play is reversed: catch the show in Cebu, sleep in the city, and make a weekend of it. Expect hotels near the SRP to fill fast on event dates. Booking a base in IT Park or the Business Park and taking a 20 to 30 minute ride to the arena is the saner move.

So, which one?

• Pick IT Park if your ideal evening ends with a walk to dessert, you're mixing a little work into the weekend, or you're building around a concert or event in the city.
• Pick Mactan if the weekend is about water, you're flying in or out on tight time, or the goal is to hear as little traffic as possible.
• Can't choose? Cebu is small enough to split the difference: one night city, one night island. The bridge crossing takes about half an hour on a good day.
